INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THIS PAGE.

Your OWN ROUTE:

If you are entering your own route there is a certain format that must be followed.

VOR or INTERSECTION direct to another VOR or INTERSECTION:
Enter the VOR/INTERSECTION name followed by a space and then enter the next VOR.
Example: CVI   FKN   HPW   ROOKY   GVE   WITTO
This reads the CVI VOR direct to the FKN VOR direct to the HPW VOR direct to the ROOKY INTERSECTION direct to GVE VOR and then direct to the WITTO INTERSECTION.
Always leave a space between fixes. Do not put dashes(-) commas(,) or type DIRECT between Fixes. Just leave a space.

VICTOR AIRWAYS:
Enter the first VOR/INTERSECTI0N that joins the Airway and type in the Victor Airway identifier to the last VOR/Intersection that you use on that Airway.
Example: CVI   V260   HPW   V38   GVE   V3   WITTO
This reads the CVI VOR then fly Victor Airway V260 to the HPW VOR then V38 to the GVE VOR and then V3 to the WITTO INTERSECTION.
Always leave a space between fixes and airways. Do not put dashes(-) commas(,) or anything else between the Fixes and Airways. Just leave a space.

JET AIRWAYS:
Enter the first VOR/INTERSECTION that joins the Airway and type in the Jet Airway identifier to the last VOR/Intersection that you use on that airway.
Example: INPIN  J55  SAV   J207  RDU  J52   ZITTO
Always leave a space between fixes and airways. Do not put dashes(-) commas(,) or anything else between the Fixes and Airways. Just leave a space.

SID's/DP's/STAR's:
Check in the light blue box (near the bottom of page) to see what SID's/STAR's are available for your Departure/Arrival Airports.
For SID's/DP's enter the name of the departure followed by a period(.) and then the last fix on the departure.
Note: A SID/DP that is only a Turn/Radar Vector (VECTOR) with no pilot navigation required is not entered, just enter the first Fix.
Example: YEllO2.CYS or MCOY5.SAV
For STARS enter the name of the first fix on the arrival followed by a period(.) and then the name of the arrival.
Example: SNY.LANDR2 or PBI.GOOFY4
Remember to put the period in the SID or STAR. between the fix and the departure/arrival name.

NDBs:
An NDB can be used in the routing of a flight plan. The only difference for entering an NDB (versus a VOR) is that you must put "-NDB" after the fix identifier.
The correct format is XXX-NDB, where XXX is the NDB fix identifier.
Example: DIW-NDB or CLB-NDB

Lat/Long:
A point defined by Latitude and Longitude can be used in the routing of a flight plan.
The correct format is ####N/#####W, where ####N is the latitude (in Degree Minutes ddmmN) and #####W is the Longitude (in Degree Minutes dddmmN or 0ddmmN).
Example: 4116N/07334W or 3559N/11432W

AIRPORTS:
VFR pilots can use an Airport as part of their routing in a flight plan.
When using an Airport as part of your route, you must use it's four letter ID, to distinguish between airports and VORs. (i.e MVY VOR and MVY Airport).
IF the airport only has a 3 letter ID (i.e. 11N) then add a 'K' to the front of the Airport ID. (i.e. K11N).
Example: K40N or KJFK or KCRQ or KS87

PLACE/BEARING/DISTANCE:
A navigation position can be defined from a VOR using a radial and distance from the VOR.
The correct format is PPP/BBB/DDD, where PPP stands for place(VOR), BBB for Bearing(or Radial) and DDD stand for Distance (or DME).
Note: PPP must be a valid VOR,  BBB(radial) must be a number between 1 and 360, and DDD(distance) must be a number between 1 and 999.
Example: FMN/114/56  ABQ  ABQ/147/37  CNX
This reads direct to the FMN 114 degree 56 DME fix direct to ABQ then direct to the ABQ 147 degree 37DME fix then direct CNX.
Remember to put / 's in between the VOR and Radial and between the radial and the distance.
Some valid formats would be ORD/180/12 or ORD/70/115 or ORD/3/5 or ORD/003/005 Don't forget the two / 's.

Filing a Delay over a VOR or Intersection
Filing a 'Delay' over a VOR or Intersection is usually needed for test flights and military training flights.
It is not needed nor should it be used for a normal flight plan from one airport to another.
The correct format is PPP/D#+## (or PPPPP/D#+## for 5 letter fixes, or PPP-NDB/D#+## for NDBs) , where PPP (or PPPPP or PPP-NDB) stands for place(VOR, intersection, or NDB), and D#+## is the length of the delay in hours and minutes
i.e.
AML/D1+15 would mean after reaching the Armel VOR you will hold for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
GAG/D0+05 would mean after reaching the Gage VOR, you will hold for 5 minutes .
PMM/D1+00 would mean after reaching the Pullman VOR, you will hold for 1 hour.
MERIT/D1+15 would mean after reaching the MERIT intersection, you will hold for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
DIW-NDB/D0+35 would mean after reaching the DIXON NDB, you will hold for 35 minutes.

Some sample routes would be:
SBJ V3 CMK/D1+00 V3 HFD PVD
SBJ CMK/D0+45 HFD PVD
CMK/D2+05 HFD PVD
CMK MERIT/D0+15 HFD PVD
ILM DIW-NDB/D2+00 CHS
Note: PPP must be a valid VOR (PPPPP or PPP-NDB must be a valid intersection or NDB) ,  /D#+## must be enter with hours(#) plus(+) minutes(##) between 1 minute and up to 9 hours and 59 minutes.

DIRECT FROM AIRPORT TO ANOTHER AIRPORT:
You would enter the word DIRECT in the section for OWN ROUTE.
Do NOT use the word DIRECT if you are using any VOR/INTERSECTIONS/AIRWAYS in your routing. IT WON'T WORK!
Use DIRECT only if you want your routing to be direct from the Departure airport to the Destination airport.
Using DIRECT will give you fixes at 25 or 50 mile intervals for short trips and at 100 mile intervals for longer trips.
'If you are filing the route will be filed as DIRECT.
'We DON'T recommend using DIRECT except for very short routes.
'We DO recommend putting some VOR's in your route so you can take advantage of winds aloft reporting.
Example: DIRECT
Once again DIRECT is only used if you are flying direct from your departure airport to your destination airport.

THE BIG PICTURE:
OK. Here's what some valid Routes would look like.
Remember you do not put the departure airport or arrival airport in the route.
Example: BREZY   V39   CMK   MERIT   HFD.GRAYM2
This reads after departure fly direct to the BREZY intersection then V39 to CMK then direct to the MERIT intersection
and then direct to HFD and then a GRAYM2 Arrival into your destination.

Example: MCOY5.AMG   J45   ATL.VOLL5  
This reads after departure fly the MCOY5 departure with a AMG transition, then J45 to the ATL VOR
and then fly the VOLL5 arrival into your destination.

This should cover most of the possible routings that you would enter.
